Toowoomba ZAF Cricket Festival

The venue on Saturday 8th October was Hodgsonvale Sports Club at the South end of Toowoomba. The occasion was the Annual ZAF (Zimbabwe Aid Fund, supporting pensioners) Cricket Tournament. Smile IT once again a forerunner in helping others less fortunate than themselves.

Not only was Smile IT a major sponsor, the Directors Peter D & Peter J showed their versatility & talent as they put together a team which they themselves participated in. The team consisted of 13 enthusiastic players of all ages. They were ready to show the public they had to offer more than their IT & business skills as they set out to compete on the cricket pitch.

4 teams were vying for the trophy & the teams were made up of differing ages with at least one female in each team.

The weather was hot & dry and the atmosphere charged with the competitiveness amongst the cricketers.

Many players were ex 1st Team school or club players who hadn’t lost their edge.

An early start at 8am saw 2 teams walk onto the pitch to take their places. The spectators were not disappointed as they were treated to 1st class cricket from all the players.

At the Club house Lauren was putting her creativity & organisational skills to the test as she began the children’s activities for the day. Face painting, Treasure Hunt, a Jumping Castle were a few of the fun & successful events available throughout the day.

Egg & Bacon rolls were served for breakfast, Borewors (African sausage) in Rolls for lunch, Bobotie for dinner and scrumptious homemade morning & afternoon teas were on offer to keep the energy levels up. Drinks, tea & coffee were available for a nominal price to keep everyone rehydrated.

The matches finished all too quickly & the Prize giving & Auction were held at 6pm.

The Smile IT team were pipped at the post & came in 2nd. They did, however, win the prize for the best dressed team and a number of individual prizes. From the Sunshine Coast, 14 year old Daisy was the youngest member of the team. Daisy held her own, played exceptionally well, won a prize & was a great asset to the talented team.

$10,000 was raised & once again Smile IT felt great satisfaction at being involved in another successful community event.
