Senior Systems Engineer

Location: Tingalpa, QLD

Type: Full Time

An exciting new role has opened at Smile IT! We are searching for an experienced and motivated Senior Systems Engineer to join our Projects Team full time.

The role is primarily based out of our Tingalpa head office or remotely with client site visits across Southeast Queensland and occasional planned regional travel.

About the Role:

This is the senior technical delivery seat in our Projects Team. You’ll own the technical outcome of infrastructure and cloud projects from design through to build, cutover, handover and documentation – and you will lift the standard of the work around you through peer review and mentoring.

You’ll engage directly with clients to gather requirements, define scopes of work and deliver solutions aligned to Smile IT standards. Project scheduling and commercials sit with our Head of Projects, which means you get to focus on the technical delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and implementation of infrastructure and cloud projects, including servers, virtualisation, storage, Microsoft 365 and Azure.
  • Design and deliver supporting network infrastructure, including switching, firewalls, wireless and site-to-site VPN.
  • Produce solution designs, network diagrams and bills of materials that are practical, supportable and aligned with Smile IT standards.
  • Plan and lead change windows, including occasional out-of-hours work where the client environment requires it.
  • Engage with clients to gather requirements and develop scopes of work and support pre-sales with technical scoping and effort estimation.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues during project deployments, remotely and on site.
  • Peer review designs and builds produced by other engineers before they reach the client.
  • Mentor junior engineers and act as the technical escalation point for complex project issues.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and run structured handovers into our Service Delivery team at project close.
  • Keep accurate time and project notes in our PSA so delivery stays visible.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and certifications relevant to the role.

 

Skills & Experience:

  • 7 years of relevant experience in systems engineering or similar client facing roles. 
  • Strong in network configurations and troubleshooting (Fortinet, Sophos, Ubiquiti).
  • Strong in server virtualisation, storage and management (Windows Server, Active Directory, Entra ID).
  • Strong documentation and communication abilities.
  • Ability to develop and execute IT roadmaps in collaboration with stakeholders.  
  • Be a strategic thinker with a proactive approach to challenges.  
  • An innovative, confident problem-solver who thrives in dynamic environments.  
  • Strong leadership skills to support the growth and development of junior team members.

 

Desirable:

  • Microsoft certifications (AZ-104, AZ-800/801 or equivalent).
  • Experience in mining, resources or another heavy-industry vertical.
  • Exposure to OT/ICS network segregation and industrial environments.
  • Familiarity with HaloPSA, IT Glue, NinjaOne, Acronis and UniFi.
  • Prior mentoring or technical lead responsibility.

A valid Blue Card is desirable. In the absence of one, successful applicants will be required to undergo a police check.

Systems Engineer

Location: Central Queensland

Type: Full Time

We are looking for an experienced Systems Engineer based in Central Queensland to join our team supporting a key mining client on a drive-in/drive-out basis.

This is a hands-on infrastructure role supporting critical server, cloud and network environments, ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex technical challenges while building strong client relationships.

About the Role:

You will primarily support a dedicated mining account, with opportunities to assist across our other mining clients. The role operates predominately on a 38-hour week with a fortnightly rotation.

Week 1: Travel to and work onsite at a client mine site, delivering infrastructure support, project work and escalation assistance.

Week 2: Working from home, focusing on monitoring, administration, change management and support to other mining clients as required.

What You Will Do:

  • Manage and maintain server, virtualisation and cloud infrastructure across client mining environments.
  • Administer Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP and Microsoft Cloud Services.
  • Monitor and maintain network infrastructure including switches, firewalls, wireless networks and VPN connectivity.
  • Deliver infrastructure projects including upgrades, migrations, deployments and lifecycle replacements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex escalations – server, network, and cloud issues that sit above the field tech layer.
  • Manage backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity solutions in business-critical environments.
  • Work closely with onsite technicians and client stakeholders to ensure seamless service delivery.
  • Ensure all work complies with mine site safety requirements and operational procedures.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for systems, configuration, changes, and compliance requirements.
  • Provide remote support to multiple mining accounts during WFH weeks.

What You Will Bring:

  • Experience as a Systems Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer or Senior Systems Administrator or similar (mining experience is highly regarded).
  • Strong hands-on experience across Microsoft 365, Azure, Windows Server, Active Directory, and Entra ID.
  • Solid networking knowledge including TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, switching, wireless, firewalls and VPNs technologies.
  • Experience with virtualisation platforms such as VMware or Hyper-V.
  • Experience managing backup, disaster recovery and monitoring solutions.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritise competing demands and take ownership through to resolution.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build trusted relationships with clients.
  • A current Australian driver’s licence and the ability to travel to mine sites.
  • Ability to complete and pass a pre-employment medical, including regular drug and alcohol testing.

Desirable:

  • Current Coal Board Medical (CBM) and/or Standard 11 induction.
  • Experience with Halo PSA (preferable) or similar PSA’s.
  • Microsoft certifications (AZ-104, AZ-800/801 or equivalent).
  • Experience with monitoring platforms like Ninja RMM & Auvik.
